Definition

What is Engineered Stone?

Engineered stone is primarily composed of ground natural quartz, which is blended with polymer resins, pigments, and other carefully selected materials. The mixture is then formed into slabs using a process involving high pressure and heat. The result is a durable and non-porous surface that boasts natural looking, consistent color and pattern throughout, making it an ideal choice for designers seeking both aesthetic appeal and practical performance in commercial restroom environments.

Cross-section of a surface shows layers: finished top, 90-95% crushed quartz crystals, 5-10% resins and polymers,

Deeper Dive & Resources

Gain a deeper understanding of Engineered Stone by exploring resources and expert insights.

Engineered stone for toilet partitions is available in two primary thicknesses:

  • 18.7mm (0.74″) – derived from 2cm slabs
  • 28.7mm (1.13″) – derived from 3cm slabs

These thicknesses are achieved after polishing both sides of the slab, which is necessary for toilet partition applications.

Engineered stone is polished, providing a high-gloss finish that enhances color and pattern.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does the weight of engineered stone partitions compare to other materials?

Engineered stone is significantly heavier than many other partition materials. For example, a 58″ x 58″ panel of engineered stone could weigh up to 356 lbs, compared to much lighter options like laminate or wood veneer.

  • Can engineered stone partitions be used in shower areas?

Yes! Engineered stone performs well in the presence of moisture.

  • Are there color or pattern limitations with engineered stone?

Engineered stone offers a wide range of colors and patterns, from solid colors to designs that mimic natural stone. However, the options may be more limited compared to materials like laminate. Engineered Stone colors and grains may vary significantly from component to component. Custom colors or patterns may be available but could increase costs and lead times.

  • How are engineered stone partitions installed?

Due to their weight, engineered stone partitions require careful installation and may need additional structural support. Installation may require additional time and specialized tools. Ironwood Manufacturing provides installation instructions and can offer advice on proper installation techniques.

  • What type of maintenance do engineered stone partitions require?

Engineered stone is relatively low-maintenance. Regular cleaning with mild soap and water is typically sufficient. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that could damage the surface.

  • Can I specify natural stone for my toilet partition design?

Many natural stone selections are too porous and brittle to be suitable for commercial restroom partitions. Some selections however may be suitable with material supplier approval and sufficient engineering and fortification. Doubled up pilasters 5-6cm thick are usually required with natural stone selections, which increase weight and cost.
